A careless police officer fumbling with his gun while off-duty was filmed shooting himself in an elevator after a dinner-date with his wife. The cop is a 25-year-veteran on the force, yet evidently doesn't feel the need to use a safety.

California Cops Allow Suspect to Escape while Harassing Videographer

Police in California allowed a suspect to escape after they decided to harass a man for taking a picture of the arrest.

Naturally, the Glendale police officers ended up blaming the photographer for causing the escape, handcuffing and detaining him, accusing him of knowing the escaped suspect because they had made eye contact moments earlier.

But the fault lies completely with the cops, who allowed their arrogance, insecurities and complete disregard for the Constitution to let the suspect escape in a classic Keystone Cop moment quickly going viral on Live Leak.

Perhaps if officer Bolton (first name possibly Matt) didn?t feel the need to abandon his investigation to walk halfway down the block to blind the videographer with his flashlight, ironically accusing him of acting juvenile for taking a photo of the arrest ?(while never mentioning the alleged eye contact at the time), the suspect would have thought twice about making a run for it.

Now the question is, was the suspect they allowed to escape a violent felon, potentially putting the community at risk, or just another hapless drunk unexpectedly finding himself at a DUI checkpoint?

Glendale police have made no mention of the escape on its Facebook page?as we can imagine this is an incident they will like to forget. But that is unlikely to happen.

Glendale Police are at it again. At about 1030 at night i was riding my bike and rode past a dui and license checkpoint. I decide to stop and take a photo of the checkpoint. Not wanting to go through the checkpoint, I continued walking past it. As I started to get back on my bike I noticed the Glendale Police had someone detained on the curb. I walked passed the ?investigation? and after about 30 feet of clearance, since I already had my phone out, I turned around to take a quick photo (no flash). In the process of me taking a photo I noticed one of the officers coming towards me so i switched to video(no flash) and slowly walked away.

Officer BOLTON asked me can i help you?, I gave no answer because I was already walking away, and I obviously didn?t need any help. He then told me I was interrupting his investigation, and i needed to go about 1/4 of a mile away in order for him to not be distracted, or I was going to be arrested for not complying. I started walking away, he acknowledged that, turned around and started walking back to his his partner (whom HE abandoned). As he was walking back their suspect took off, because of his stupidity and ignorance.

After going to the corner, I continued to film everything that was taking place. I was here for about 10 minutes when I noticed one of the officers that had the guy detained walk up to me. I stayed where I was doing nothing wrong. He then came up to me and told me to ?sit on the curb you are being detained?;, me being a free citizen who had done nothing wrong I told him ?no i had done nothing wrong.?

He then started getting physical and told me to put my arms behind my back, I asked what crime did i commit, and he told me ;I am under investigation I said for what, he then replied and said well that?s what we?re are trying to figure out. Last time I checked you are innocent until proven guilty, but in this case I was guilty until proven innocent. After resisting being detained he eventually got handcuffs on me. I was still standing and he had told me to sit on the curb, Angered by this whole situation I did not sit when he told me. So with all his body weight, he pulled me by the chain of the handcuffs to the ground where I then hit my head and fell right on the cuffs which caused them to squeeze my wrist.

Still confused about why I was being treated like this, they sat me down for about 15 minutes when officer Bolton showed up spitting on the ground in front of me, being Extremely rude. They accused me of knowing the guy because I looked at him when i walked by and we made eye contact. Does that make sense? First of all, does everyone who walks buy someone being arrested or detained automatically know them? Second, If you thought i knew him then why didn?t you ask me that when we first made contact, and why did you let me go? After me not talking, and them threatening (bluffing) to take me to jail numerous times, even after I still didn?t talk. They let me go, Scott free, telling me to have a nice night, after abusing me like an animal or some criminal. I went to the hospital to find out I had a sprained wrist.

I dont know why cops feel they are some divine soldiers of god, where they can just go around doing what they please. Some may argue I should of just minded my own business in the first place, but after being abused by these cops numerous times I like to LEGALLY get as much documentation as possible, when I can. I didn?t yell out pigs!, I simply Stood at a distance and wanted to take a quick picture. I also don?t know what the guy was detained for.

Why are cops so afraid of a camera?

U.S. War on Poverty Failed While Global Poverty Declined 80%: Economic Liberalization Begets Prosperity and Equality

50 years after LBJ declared a ?War on Poverty,? the U.S. would do well to take a page from the global playbook--whereby economic liberalization and more open trade has resulted in an 80% decline in abject poverty since 1976.

The graphs below, taken from the National Bureau of Economic Research Working Paper, ?Parametric Estimations of the World Distribution of Income,? surely ought to impress even the most avid central-planner:

To see how it happened, start with these graphs showing GDP (red) against the Poverty Rate (blue) for various regions over the past 40 years:

As the paper?s authors observe:

It is immediately visible that the series are almost perfect mirror images of each other: the poverty rate falls when per capita GDP rises and vice versa. ... In particular, we see no examples of poverty reduction without growth (or sustained rises with poverty accompanying growth) on a regional scale. [Emphasis added]

Thus, contrary to recent controversies around the issue, a rising tide does indeed raise all boats--regardless of region.

And for those decrying supposedly increasing inequality, the paper reveals very good news on this front as well--showing inequality declining in sync with poverty:

A look at China provides just one dramatic example. Since Nixon?s visit opening trade with China in 1972, and China?s subsequent ?Change, Reform, Open up? economic reforms beginning in 1978 and accelerating in the 1980s and ?90s, the Chinese economy has increased by 9.5% a year, resulting in vast improvements in both income levels and distribution:

While the paper?s authors did not include a survey of changes in economic policies across the regions covered by the study, any quick check against independent sources for such information makes its graphs just that much more exciting, with more and less dramatic improvements correlating with greater and lesser economic freedom.

It?s time for all who profess to care about the poor to join Bono in enlightenment. To all ?Progressives? in the U.S. bemoaning the U.S.?s flat poverty rate over the past 50 years, and ramping up to make 2014 the year of the fight against ?inequality?:

"Capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid."

And the economic growth that brings individuals out of dependency flattens inequality.

On this 50th anniversary of a failed domestic War on Poverty, let?s bring this global lesson home and hold up those responsible for prolonging economic stagnation in the U.S. and increasing the numbers dependent on government assistance as the true villains in the inequality play.

Police Shoot Man Assembling Toy Gun While Sitting In His Own Car

Department spokesman Capt. Rod Light said Casey Gilette, 29, was on a routine patrol about 3 a.m. when he noticed a vehicle had been parked at Classic Auto Wash, 907 E. Nob Hill Blvd., for more than an hour. Light said that based on a preliminary investigation, Gilette approached the vehicle and opened the passenger-side door. He saw a man in the driver?s seat with what appeared to be a handgun and his finger on the trigger. He then fired, Light said.

?Once investigators got on the scene, it was later determined that the handgun was a replica of an actual firearm,? Light said. ?It?s what I would refer to as an Airsoft gun, but they appear very real.?

Airsoft is a trademark name for replica firearms that fire plastic pellets. They are designed to be nonlethal and often come in realistic replicas. Such devices typically have an orange tip at the end of the barrel intended to indicate it is not a real firearm.

?I believe this particular handgun had an orange tip. But based on our investigation I don?t want to go into particulars and details of the position of the gun and where the officer was. It was 3 a.m., it was dark and again we haven?t interviewed this officer yet and we don?t want to speculate,? Light said.

Gilette had another person with him while on patrol, Chief Dominic Rizzi Jr. said Monday afternoon.

?Yes, he did have a ride-along with him, and there?s nothing inappropriate about that,? said Rizzi, who declined to identify the person.

Police have yet to interview Gilette. Under the police union contract with the city, an officer involved in a shooting is not required to give a statement until 48 hours after the incident, although officers may waive that waiting period if they choose to.

Although the investigation is in the preliminary stages, Rizzi said Monday morning that he believes that Gilette acted appropriately.

?Based on the preliminary investigation, I absolutely stand behind the officer and his actions in the shooting that occurred,? Rizzi said.

Light said the investigators believe that Arias was attempting to assemble pieces of the pellet gun, because they found discarded packaging for accessories in the vehicle.

Having a real gun in Washington is not a crime, nor is it grounds for summary execution. This was a toy gun, which the man was said to be assembling within his own car. The officer approached him, opened his door, then executed him. No doubt he'll claim "self-defense" and say he "feared for his life."

Opening the car door is a violation of this man's rights. Hopefully the family will sue for a couple million. Summary execution sums it up well. Police are being "knighted" via FPO/FFO malingering every cop that does this knowing full well they are backed to kill whom ever they like w/o accountability to the victim. Mirrors Inquisition. It's a mistake to let him get away w/this, but people are in some kind of a ha-ha-hapee-ness stupor and just are NOT getting the big picture, my opinion. The fact that someone removes comments no matter what they are is unamerican. Do not suppress or you are part of the problem.

Cop Shot Himself While Driving, Let Car Crash Into Oncoming Traffic

Pretty selfish way to commit suicide...

A Bladensburg police officer who died after a collision in Anne Arundel County had shot himself while driving, the Maryland medical examiner determined.

Officer Brian Johnson died from a gunshot wound to the upper body, and his death was a suicide, Anne Arundel County police officials said Monday, citing findings by the medical examiner's office in Baltimore.

The incident occurred about 9 a.m. Saturday on Route 100 near Catherine Avenue in Pasadena. Johnson shot himself while he was alone in his marked police vehicle, and his cruiser crossed the median and collided into a vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction, police said.

Anne Arundel County police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said that "it's unusual" for someone to commit suicide while in a moving vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that Johnson crashed into was treated at the scene and released. While police were investigating the incident, part of westbound Route 100 was completely closed for a few hours, and traffic on eastbound Route 100 was reduced to one lane.

Initially, it was thought he had experienced a "medical emergency" such as a heart attack. Fortunately, his victim escaped with his life.

Glad he's dead. Typical psychotic cop mentality, caring only for himself and completely oblivious to the effects on people's lives surrounding him, or just too self centered to care. North Carolina: Driving While Nervous is Not a Crime

The second-highest court in North Carolina last week ruled police had no business stopping a car because its occupants appeared to be driving while nervous. On April 15, 2011, a pair of Sampson County sheriff's deputies were running a speed trap on Interstate 40 when they noticed a green minivan. Corporal Bass and Pope each testified the vehicle slowed from 73 MPH to 65 MPH in the 70 MPH zone and that the driver and passenger stared straight ahead and "appeared nervous" as they passed.

The officers pulled out and caught up to the minivan. When the patrol car pulled along side, the minivan occupants did not make eye contact. The deputies claimed they saw the vehicle cross the fog line and was driving slowly, so they pulled it over for "unsafe movement." A dashcam video of the incident shows no crossing of the fog line or other evidence of unsafe driving.

Gina Canty, the driver, was given a warning. She also consented to a search that uncovered a revolver and a rifle in a suitcase belonging to the passenger, her ex-husband Nathaniel Canty. A Sampson County Superior Court judge found Nathaniel Canty guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. On appeal, a three-judge panel began poking holes in the police account of events.

"We find it hard to believe that these officers could tell Ms. Canty and defendant were 'nervous' as they passed by the officers on the highway and as the officers momentarily rode alongside them," Judge Cheri Beasley wrote for the court.

The judges also dismissed the idea that the minivan's slowing after seeing a patrol car running a speed trap.

"The reduction in speed standing alone could be explained a number of different ways, including normal apprehension many people feel when approaching a law enforcement officer," Judge Beasley wrote. "Nervousness, failure to make eye contact with law enforcement, and a relatively small reduction in speed is 'conduct falling within the broad range of what can be described as normal driving behavior... Based on the totality of the circumstances, these officers lacked reasonable suspicion to initiate the traffic stop that resulted in the search and seizure of the weapons in this case."

The judges declared the lawyer in this case should have filed a motion to suppress the evidence gathered during the traffic stop. Because the defense counsel was "ineffective," the three-judge panel ordered a new trial in which the motion to suppress would likely succeed.

Apparently, 99% of Mr. Sherlock Holmes' findings would also be ruled "insufficient". If police officers was able to _correctly_ detect the crime just by momentarily looking at the passing vehicle, they only can be commended for their skill.

Why would someone consent to the search of the vehicle, is totally different question. Especially knowing that illegal items will be found. First they allow search, then they scramble to suppress what was found. Wouldn't it be easier to simply say "No, I don't consent"?

Marijuana Sobriety Checkpoints: New Legislation to Outlaw Driving While Stoned

Some will swear that marijuana has merit for motorists. Others fear impairment of any kind, at any level. We're pretty terrified of teen drivers, especially those with cell phones and hangovers, but we'll leave it to the government to intervene on this great debate.

Under a bill introduced last month by a SoCal assemblywoman, driving while stoned would result in an automatic DUI offense.

The proposed bill would tag this "offense" onto the section of the Vehicle Code that addresses drunk driving. The new section states that any level of "cannabinoids or synthetic cannabinoid compound" found in a driver's blood or urine, up to three hours after a traffic stop, would equate to a DUI, according to AB 2552, which was introduced by Assemblywoman Norma Torres (D-Pomona).

However,cannabinoids remain in the body for days or weeks after consumption, according to California NORML. If passed, Torres' bill would essentially criminalize outright operation of a motor vehicle by any marijuana user. So hopefully tokers know enough beer-drinkers skilled enough to stay under 0.08 to designated-drive them to work.

Week Ahead: Fed Expected to Launch New Program While Europe Debt Troubles Bubble

The Fed in the week ahead is widely expected to pull the trigger on a new easing program, as the European debt crisis continues to boil.

The housing market will also be a focus when new and existing home sales data is released Tuesday and Wednesday. New data this past week showed a jump in foreclosure starts, signaling that a big wave of foreclosed properties will hit the struggling housing market early next year.

The Dow and S&P 500 had their best week since July and second best week since July 2010, as European officials showed support for Greece. The Nasdaq did even better ? jumping 6.3 percent, for its best week since July, 2009.

Market expectations are high that the Fed will announce a new program ? dubbed "operation twist" ? at the end of its two-day meeting Wednesday.

"Twist" is different than the much larger scale "QE2" quantitative easing program which involved the purchase of $600 billion in Treasury securities. Fed watchers expect this program to raise the duration of the securities the Fed holds, not the amount. The program, in theory, could reduce long-term interest rates as the Fed buys more securities in the middle and longer end of the yield curve.
