Statelessness: They Say it Like it's a Bad Thing

Thomas L. Knapp

Last November, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) launched a ten-year drive to end ?the scourge of statelessness.??In December, ?UNHCR?Senior Regional Protection Officer on Statelessness?Emmanuelle Mitte appealed to journalists (in west Africa and worldwide) to promote the effort, citing the press?s??responsibility to carry out advocacy, and sensitisation on the issue.? But?the campaign, starting with its name (?I Belong?), tells us more than its creators and promoters might want us to know about the relationship between the UN, political governments and those?they govern.

In truth, the United Nations might?be more accurately called the United States were the name not already?taken. It is dedicated to the preservation of a system not quite 400 years old and still not quite globally adopted: The Westphalian system, which replaced the old feudal ties of dynastic family?rule and shifting servile fealties to specific individuals with ?states? defined by fixed geographical borders (?national sovereignty?) and sporting?bureaucracies which survived individual (and increasingly titular) rulers to maintain?continuity of political government within said borders.

To put it a different way, the Westphalian system?evolved feudal serfdom into a more sustainable model of chattel ownership. Serfs belonged to specific, mortal lords. Citizens belong to?immortal bureaucracies.?The UN?s ?I Belong? campaign aims?to?herd?missing?slaves back in their pens.

Fortunately, the effort is almost certainly in vain.

Over the last 20 years or so, the Westphalian ruling class has found itself increasingly beset?by the existence and efficacy (in everything from unregulated commerce to irrepressible warfare) of??non-state entities? which recognize neither the legitimacy of its?bureaucratic rulers nor the sanctity of its?borders and ?sovereignties.? While it?s not a given that all those non-state entities represent an attractive alternative to the Westphalian model (I doubt most of us want to live under the rule of a ??global caliphate,? for example), it?s clear that the model is in tatters. And history is unlikely?to run backward on its behalf.

Fortunately for most of us ? and unfortunately for projects like ?I Belong? ? ?a funny thing happened on America?s way to permanent primacy in a post-WWII Westphalian hegemony: A system designed to preserve the pinnacle exemplar of Westphalian nation-statism by maintaining bureaucratic and military continuity even under the pressures of nuclear attack got?released into the wild.

The Internet has?enabled billions to uncouple themselves from national loyalties in various and significant ways. Hierarchical political government rooted in geography is giving way to self-organized horizontal networking rooted in mutual personal interest. Economic systems crafted by and for the state?s ruling class are coming apart at the seams and leaking tax revenues at the joints as more and more of us trade without state permission and without paying the tolls the state demands.

The Internet and other technologies continue to eat at the state?s connective tissues. Technologically reduced capital requirements make it possible to locally manufacture goods once centrally produced by state-boosted?industries and distributed over the state?s ubiquitous road networks (making regulation and tax collection increasingly difficult). Cell phones with wi-fi capabilities and ?mesh networking? apps allow?non-state networks to continue operations?when the state pulls the plug on its centrally controlled utilities.

?I Belong? focuses?on bringing a few million refugees back under ownership?of?the states which made them refugees in the first place. But many more millions than that have consciously (and billions unconsciously) begun the process of escaping those states, becoming stateless by choice.

For two centuries, anarchists have treated the state as a cancer. Maybe we were wrong. Maybe it?was actually a viable organ. But if so, it is now a vestigial organ ? humanity?s appendix, if you will. It serves no worthwhile purpose and is best surgically excised and thrown in the trash?before it ruptures and kills humanity with the poisons it has stored up for 400 years.

Jews are stateless, thats why they get their religion confused as their country or something....their food is jewish, hospitals are jewish, almost everything they do they call "jewish" instead of american, or iranian, or whatever country their from. Thats what makes the jews the worst in my opinion, they make anywhere they live their own little country by calling it jewish. They're like a virus, they spread everywhere and infect everything but never call where they're living home, that way they can keep spreading the virus.

Video Shows Cop Shoot Self While Fumbling With His Gun

Chris | InformationLiberation

A careless police officer fumbling with his gun while off-duty was filmed shooting himself in an elevator after a dinner-date with his wife. The cop is a 25-year-veteran on the force, yet evidently doesn't feel the need to use a safety.

The Unintended Consequences of Banning the "World's Oldest Profession"

By Abigail Hall

Prostitution is known as "the world's oldest profession." Indeed, as far back at the 18th century B.C., the Code of Hammurabi contained?provisions regarding?rules and protection for?sex workers. "Sacred prostitution," or sex associated with religious worship, occurred in many ancient societies and is well-documented. Over time, however, the sex industry has come under increased regulation. In the U.S., prostitution is only legal in the state of Nevada.

Despite this prohibition, the world's oldest profession is alive and well. There are an estimated 1 million prostitutes in the United States. Worldwide, an estimated 42 million people make a living selling sex. In the U.S., street prostitutes earn approximately $18,000 annually. High-end escorts can earn upwards of $200,000 a year.

(Source: Elon University blog)

When I have the occasion to discuss legalizing prostitution (who said economics is boring?!), I'm typically met with puzzled looks and a barrage of statistics about sex trafficking and the general exploitation of women. These are followed by the question, "How can you, as a woman, be in favor of letting women sell their bodies?! Don't you want to end things like sex trafficking?!"

The answer to the last question is an enthusiastic, ?yes.? In fact, if we truly want to protect (mainly) women involved in the sex industry, it's time to seriously discuss the idea of legalizing sex work.

I am not alone in this suggestion. In fact, the U.N., Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International?have all suggested that legalizing sex work would decrease the exploitation of women. What may not be clear is why they suggest this would be the case. The logic behind the legalization of prostitution is a straightforward application of the economics of prohibition.

By making prostitution illegal, the government attempts to eliminate the market for sex work. This prohibition, however, doesn't eliminate the market. Instead, it pushes it?underground.

As a result, those who work in the sex industry cannot use legitimate legal channels to resolve problems or report crime, as their participation in the industry automatically makes them criminals. A prostitute, for example, cannot file a report or go to court in order to compel a client to pay, or report an abusive pimp her without risking her own freedom.

As I've discussed elsewhere?(regarding the market for illegal drugs), prohibition increases the likelihood of cartelization and increases the likelihood these cartels will use violence as a means of control. This is precisely what we've observed as a result of the prohibition of sex work. As opposed to breaking down such enterprises, prohibition has effectively increased the profitability of sex trafficking, making it more appealing to criminal enterprises. By legalizing the sex trade, we would allow those involved in the sex trade to come out from the shadows, use legitimate business practices and legal channels, and decrease the likelihood that women will be trafficked by violent groups of criminals.

These ideas are supported by the data. New Zealand, for example, legalized prostitution in 2003. The New Zealand Ministry of Justice examined the impact of the law on human trafficking. They found "no incidence of human trafficking" and that the law made it easier for workers to report abuse and for police to prosecute sex crimes.

Legalizing the sex trade means one has to?respect the choices people make, male or female. While?one may find prostitution morally or otherwise objectionable, the fact that such activities?offend one?s sensibilities does not constitute a legitimate argument against it.

I am often confronted with arguments that we should make prostitution illegal because it's poor women who work as prostitutes, or that prostitution will spread disease. The data indicate, however, that legalizing prostitution decreases the transmission of disease. The logic is straightforward. As prostitution becomes a legitimate profession, it allows for prostitutes to be more open with their doctors about their sexual history and seek treatment for STIs and other problems.

The fact that those who select prostitution as a profession may be poor is inconsequential (though we can discuss why other opportunities may not be available). It may be true that some women who work as prostitutes would strongly prefer another profession. Even if this is the case, women who voluntarily choose prostitution as a means of income should be allowed to practice their profession in the safest environment possible. The safest environment, in this case, is a legal market for sex.

I don't get the map :
I'm from Denmark and while prostitution isn't exactly illegal here, it sure as Hell ain't exactly legal either ! IF you don't have it as only, or primary income-source, it is 'legal' - Unless you share the premisses with others, in that case you are a 'pimp' or a 'madame' and 'they' WILL take whatever you earned away from you - And give you a nice tax-fine on top !

In Sweden .. Well, what can I say ? It is a criminal offence to BUY'sexual favours', however SELLING them is totally OK - As long as you do it on the streets ..

My conclusion : Government has NO business in peoples pants, be they male or female .

I suspect the map is heavily "interpreted" to make the point that the US is like our commie enemies and, of course, backwards as Africa.

Cops Punish Checkpoint Refusenik By Jailing Him For 19 Days On Charges Later Dropped

Chris | InformationLiberation

We've posted a lot of videos of checkpoint refusals gone right, but never forgot, when dealing with government agents you're dealing with people who are borderline illiterate and almost never know the specifics of the laws they're tasked to enforce (nor do they care to learn them). Such irrational crazies can, and do, frequently do irrational and crazy things, which this case from Reason illustrates perfectly.

From Reason:

You've probably seen them before: internal border checkpoint refusals, now a popular YouTube genre. Some are funny. Others are hostile. But for Greg Rosenberg, a naturalized U.S. citizen who speaks accented English, an encounter with South Texas border patrol resulted in weeks of jail time without a single charge being prosecuted.

Rosenberg immigrated to America 10 years ago from Armenia. Memories and family stories of Soviet rule in his country of origin infused him with strong political beliefs and a reverence for individual rights.

"Back then [in Soviet-controlled Armenia], if you complained about the government, they took you to Siberia," says Rosenberg.

So perhaps it's no surprise that Rosenberg is a checkpoint protester. As a long-haul trucker, he has to drive through these all the time. After all, there are about 170 of them scattered across the United States. And keep in mind, these checkpoints aren't on an actual border. They just have to be within 100 miles of one. The ACLU estimates that roughly two-thirds of the nation's population lives within this 100-mile zone.

Rosenberg's ordeal began in the border town of Laredo, TX. He and his friend pulled onto I-35 North at around midnight on September 26 in a truck carrying a load of Xerox machines destined for Ft. Worth. But only 29 miles north of the border, they'd encounter the Laredo North Border Patrol Station. And Greg would undergo a checkpoint interrogation like he'd never experienced before.

"They arrested me for what I looked like, but they pressed the charges because of my beliefs," says Rosenberg.

To see the full story of the encounter that led to Rosenberg's 19-day detainment on charges of "resisting, assaulting, or impeding arrest," watch the video above.

New York Family Left Homeless After Police Rip Down Walls to Serve DWI Warrant

"She really has lost all the stability in her life in one fell swoop," a local pastor explained of the widow.

DANBY, NY ? A family has been left homeless after law enforcement agencies destroyed their entire house in the process of serving a warrant for a man for driving while intoxicated.

The home of David and Melissa Cady was condemned after armored police vehicles plowed through several walls while attempting to get 36-year-old Mr. Cady to surrender. A bench warrant had been issued after Mr. Cady missed a court appearance August 26, 2014, regarding his DWI conviction. On December 30th, 2014, a SWAT team moved in to make the arrest.

With the home at 127 Hornbrook Road surrounded, Melissa and the two children peacefully exited upon request. But David Cady did not, and police spent extensive resources to perform a lengthy standoff, resulting in his death.

?I?ve known him for like 12 years,? said friend and neighbor Dave McCarthy to the Ithaca Journal. ?He?s been a good neighbor, he?s got a wife, two nice kids, a dog.?

Police cordoned off roughly 20 other homes while besieging the Cady residence. Neighbors were not allowed to return after leaving their homes on the 1.7-mile stretch of restricted roadway.

Police suspected Mr. Cady was armed. On the evening of December 30th, police say that a single shot was fired. It was the only shot of the entire standoff.

After this shot, Mr. Cady stopped communicating with police. Police proceeded to break down the walls to with armored vehicles to ?restrict his movement,? and shot teargas into the house until 61 hours had passed, when they finally realized their suspect had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Soon after, Danby Code Enforcement declared the home to be unlivable and condemned the property.

Resident Kory Watkins uploaded a video of the the Cady?s former house, which now features gaping holes and mounds of debris scattered across the yard.

Watkins captioned the video: ?All for a warrant. A violation of Probation for a D.W.I. and it took over 150 officers from over 18 agencies and military vehicles with more than 50 bombs of tear gas to end this like this?UNNECESSARY!?

The stunning turn of events left Mrs. Cady and her two children with no father and no home.

?She [Mrs. Cady] really has lost all the stability in her life in one fell swoop,? explained Pastor Ed Enstine of Danby Federated Church. ?She's basically lived her own life and worked and doesn't take handouts very easily, but in this case she's basically back to square 1 ? square 0, at this point.?

In a showing of charity, Pastor Enstine is organizing a fundraiser to help get the Cady family back on their feet. See details below.

The Ithaca Journal reported that over a dozen agencies were involved with the standoff, including Ithaca Police Department, Cornell University Police, Ithaca College Public Safety, Ithaca Fire Department, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Cayuga County Sheriff?s Office, Pennsylvania State Police, Syracuse Police Department, Elmira Police Department, Broome County Sheriff?s Office, Onondaga County Sheriff?s Office, and Tompkins County Office of Emergency Management.

HELP THE CADY FAMILY

A relief fund has been established by Pastor Ed Enstine at the Danby Federated Church. Checks should be made payable to Danby Federated Church. Write in the memo section: ?Cady Relief Fund.?

Drunken, Violent Cop Arrested Twice in Four Months. Keeps His Job and Gets Paid Vacation

?Go ahead, call the cops. They will believe me before you, because I?m a cop.?
By Matt Agorist

Chattagnooga, TN ? A Chatanooga police detective has been arrested, again, within a four month time frame and he?s still being paid.

David Catching, 34, was arrested in September for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was reported to?police for weaving in and out of cars, nearly striking many of them. Several beer bottles were found in his vehicle and he failed the field sobriety test.

The Times Free Press reported that Catchings tried to use his status as a cop to get out of the arrest.

?It should be noted during that during this entire incident, [his] mood changed from compliant to hostile,? the affidavit read. ?He advised several times that he was a cop and asked to try and work things out.?

?He advised we were brothers and I should be arresting bad guys,? the police officer present wrote in the affidavit. ?He stated his aunt signs my paycheck and advised I was a rookie and didn?t know anything about police work.?

Apparently ending up in jail again was humorous to Catching, as?his mugshot featured a smile.

On Wednesday, this stand-up?guy?landed in jail again but not for drinking and driving; this time it was drinking and beating, his mother-in-law.

According to the Times Free Press,?Janet Ashford, told police that she woke up to find Catchings drunk on her couch around 3 a.m. When she told him to leave, she said, Catchings struck her with an open hand across her face.

Catchings called her a liar when she threatened to call police and said, ?Go ahead, call the cops. They will believe me before you, because I?m a cop.?

Despite the threat, Ashford called the cops, and Catching was locked up, again.

The department has promised a ?second internal affairs investigation? into the violent drunken shenanigans of Catchings. Meanwhile Catchings gets to enjoy?his?$42,000-a-year salary, while he sits at home and puts back six-packs on the tax-payers? dime.

Ironically the police chief Fred Fletcher, said??I?m impressed with local law enforcement, that people are held to the same standards whether they are law enforcement or not.?

But he is not being held to the same standards.

Catchings job is to enforce the law.?However, he has been shown to be a failure at this, as he cannot even stop himself from breaking it. If he were employed in the private sector he would most assuredly have been fired by now.

If you are the fry cook at McDonald?s and instead of frying french fries, you fry hamburgers, you will be fired.

If you are the greeter at Wal-Mart and instead of greeting people as the walk in, you punch them in the face, you will be fire.

Neither McDonald?s, nor Wal-Mart would put you on paid vacation for doing the exact opposite of what you were hired to do.

However, if you are ?an officer of the law,? you get to enjoy being paid for a job that you do not have to do.

Police in the US Kill Citizens at Over 70 Times the Rate of Other First-World Nations

By Matt Agorist

In case you?ve been under a rock lately, it is becoming quite clear that police in the US can and will kill people, even unarmed people, even on video, and do so with impunity.

The tallying methods, or rather lack thereof, used by both the FBI and individual police departments to count the amount of people killed by police, have been shown to be staggeringly inaccurate.?

However, this inability of the government to count the number of people it kills, has been met with multiple alternative means of calculating just how deadly the state actually is.

One of these citizen run databases, is?the website www.killedbypolice.com. The site is?basically a spreadsheet that lists every person killed by cops in the years 2013 and 2014. In addition to naming those killed, it also provides a link to media reports for each of the killings, age, sex and race if available.

The tally for 2014? 1,100 people killed by those sworn to protect.?That is an average of three people a day.

Do not mistake this as saying that those who were killed were innocent. However, when we look at violent crime in this country, we can see that it is at an all time low.

While violence among citizens has dropped, violence against citizens carried out by police has been rising sharply.

When we look at citizens killed by police over the last two years, deaths have increased 44 percent in this short time;?763 people were killing by police in 2013.

As a comparison, the total number of US troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, in 2014?was?58.

Fewer soldiers were killed in war than citizens back home in ?the land of the free? in 2014, by a large margin.

So why is that?

Is this some natural tendency of police?in ?free societies? to kill their citizens more, in an effort to maintain this freedom? Hardly, and hardly is the US a free country.

According to the 2014 Legatum Prosperity Index?released in November, in the measure of personal freedom, the United States has fallen from 9th place in 2010 to 21st worldwide--behind such countries as Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Other such rankings systems show the US as low as 46.

Let?s look at our immediate neighbors to the north, Canada. The total number of citizens killed by law enforcement officers in the year 2014, was 14; that is 78 times less people than the US.

If we look at the United Kingdom, 1 person was killed by police in 2014 and 0 in 2013.?English police reportedly fired guns a total of three times in all of 2013, with zero reported fatalities.

From 2010 through 2014, there were four fatal police shootings in England, which has a population of about 52 million. By contrast, Albuquerque, N.M., with a population 1 percent the size of England's, had 26 fatal police shootings in that same time period.

China, whose population is 4 and 1/2 times the size of the United States, recorded 12 killings by law enforcement officers in 2014.

Let that sink in. Law enforcement in the US killed 92 times more people than a country with nearly 1.4 billion people.?

It doesn?t stop there.

From 2013-2014, German police killed absolutely no one.?

In the entire history of Iceland police, they have only killed 1 person ever.
