Leftist Favorite Elizabeth Warren Is A Neocon War Hawk On Iran

Chris | InformationLiberation

I can't say I'm suprised. Leftist favorite Elizabeth "Everything You Have You Owe to the State" Warren is a neocon war hawk when it comes to Iran. Despite all evidence to the contrary, she parrots the neocon propaganda line that Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons and only a US interventionist mass murder campaign can save us from imminent destruction.

Via the Huffington Post:

...Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic Senate hopeful in Massachusetts, came under fire for a hawkish statement on Iran that contradicts intelligence assertions by senior U.S. defense officials.

Warren's campaign website features a policy statement declaring that "Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons" and "Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons is unacceptable because a nuclear Iran would be a threat to the United States, our allies, the region, and the world."

The statement continues, "The United States must take the necessary steps to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. I support strong sanctions against Iran and believe that the United States must also continue to take a leadership role in pushing other countries to implement strong sanctions as well. Iran must not have an escape hatch."

Warren's claim that "Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons" is especially notable because it contradicts public statements by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta as well as reported intelligence findings of the U.S. and Israeli governments.

At a February hearing, Panetta told lawmakers, "The intelligence does not show that [Iran officials] have made the decision to proceed with developing a nuclear weapon."

Reuters reported in March, "The United States, European allies and even Israel generally agree on three things about Iran's nuclear program: Tehran does not have a bomb, has not decided to build one, and is probably years away from having a deliverable nuclear warhead."

An activist-blogger who goes by the pseudonym Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy said he questioned Warren about the statement at a public appearance in Somerville, Mass., on Sunday. The blogger wrote:

I asked why her stand is that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons ... Warren said she thinks the data says they are working on nuclear weapons.

I repeated that, no, even the administration says there's no evidence of that.

She said she'd look into it, saying it's important that political statements not ... add fuel to the fire.

Salon's Glenn Greenwald tweeted about the blogger's interview, calling it "constructive."

When reached by The Huffington Post on Tuesday, a representative of the Warren campaign did not immediately provide a comment.

Yes, I'm sure she'll "look into it," you'd think she'd have "looked into it" before advocating for mass murder.

Well, you know, you may think she misspoke all on her own, but actually it took a whole host of people and government programs to enable her to wedge her foot so deeply in her mouth. Government-owned rubber factories somewhere in South America made the soles of those tasty shoes, and they were assembled in child-labor factories in Asia overseen by the government warlords there. The U.S. federal government built the roads the shoes were shipped on to Massachusetts, and the illiterate salespeople at the local mall who sold them to her were educated in public schools ...

Jimmy Wales Says Irrelevance, Not Piracy, Will Doom Hollywood

by Mike Masnick

Jimmy Wales, who has become a bit of a thorn in the side of Hollywood of late, has given a speech in which he predicts that Hollywood is doomed, but not because of any threat from "piracy," but from the fact that technology and innovation means that the old infrastructure that filmmakers used to require is going away. As Ryan Singel at Wired reports, Wales' talk at the Internet Society's recent gathering let him predict that disruption was coming from the bottom up:
?Hollywood will be destroyed and no one will notice,? Wales said. But it won?t be Wikipedia (or Encarta) that kills the moviemaking industry: ?Collaborative storytelling and filmmaking will do to Hollywood what Wikipedia did to Encyclopedia Britannica,? he said.

Wales hedged by saying predictions are easy ? and he?s usually wrong. But he looks at a generation of kids growing up in a world of video and mastering editing software at a young age. His own 12-year-old daughter, Wales said, is already adept at iMovie and won a local award for a short film she made.

And just as Wikipedia has show that collaboration on the web is possible (despite the messiness, flame wars and turf battles found on Wikipedia Talk pages), the new generation will find ways to collaborate online to create movies to entertain themselves and their friends.

And, Wales says, they?ll do that with impressive special effects, CGI and even remote actors.

Of course, we've been seeing this trend already growing at the lower end of the scale for a while. For example, the power that individuals have to create amazing special effects has been documented for years, and the tools are only getting better and better. Does traditional Hollywood have even better tools? Absolutely, but this is a classic innovator's dilemma situation, where the tools at the low end are getting better at a faster rate, and they're reaching the "good enough" point pretty quickly -- such that the value of spending many many millions extra on special effects doesn't provide any significant benefit.

Add to that the growth of Kickstarter as an alternative funding platform, the growth of the internet as an alternative promotion and distribution method... and at some point the benefits of going with a traditional Hollywood studio become more difficult to quantify.

Of course, this isn't something that happens overnight, by any means. And there are some in Hollywood who appear to understand this and are working to get their studios ahead of the curve, though it's unclear if they'll be able to do that successfully. Either way, the point that Wales makes is a pertinent one. Instead of worrying so much about online infringement -- the studios might want to spend a little more time figuring out how they can remain relevant.

DOJ Denies Bid to Reopen Probe of Kent State Shootings

The Justice Department is refusing to reopen an investigation into the Kent State shootings just weeks ahead of its 42nd anniversary. On May 4th, 1970, National Guardsmen opened fire on hundreds of unarmed students at an antiwar rally at Ohio?s Kent State University. Four students were killed, and nine others wounded. Survivors of the massacre had called for a new federal probe two years ago following the discovery of an audiotape from the day of the shootings. The survivors say a National Guard officer can be heard issuing a command to fire followed by gunshots. But on Tuesday, the Justice Department rejected the request, saying the new audiotape is inconclusive. A group of Kent State survivors say they plan to respond by bringing the case to an international court.

New Poll: Almost Everyone Thinks It's Wrong to Jail People for Pot

by Scott Morgan

Via NORML, check out this new data from an Angus Reid Public Opinion poll.
Majorities of respondents in the three countries (Britain 56%, Canada 68%, United States 74%) welcome the concept of using alternative penalties?such as fines, probation or community service?rather than prison for non-violent offenders. At least seven-in-ten Britons (70%), Americans (74%) and Canadians (78%) believe personal marijuana use should be dealt with through alternative penalties.
?And yet I keep hearing people justifying Obama's medical marijuana crackdown on the grounds that voters will be impressed by his toughness. How much more evidence do we need that huge majorities support less punitive marijuana policies? It's time to bury the antiquated, idiotic myth that the public supports tough drug laws. It's false and it's been false for a very long time.
