Copyright Monopoly Disintegration Inevitable As It Only Takes A Single Country

by Rick Falkvinge

The emergence of experimental legally autonomous startup zones in Honduras and other places is one of the most exciting developments in a long time, and forebodes the collapse of the copyright industry?s tyranny over culture and knowledge.

I believe in competition. I believe in experimentation to see what works best and what can be predictably repeated ? call it the scientific method applied to society, if you like. This has been a problem geopolitically, as the United States has guaranteed its global rent-seeking by bullying other countries into so-called ?free trade? agreements that are, in the best kind of newspeak, the exact opposite: they are agreements to prevent free trade in favor of incumbent monopoly holders.

But a monopoly only lasts as long as all involved countries respect it. In particular, a monopoly that touches the Internet ? one such as the copyright monopoly ? requires the cooperation of every single country connected to the Internet to live yet another day. The first country to defect from this oppressive monopoly construct will cause the floodgates of culture and knowledge to open ? imagine The Pirate Bay located in a country where it is declared 100% legal, and where it is rightly illegal to harass its enormous library.

Three geopolitical zones stand to threaten the US dominance on this rent-seeking and the monopolies we know as the copyright and patent monopolies:

We have Europe, which has strength in its civil liberties tradition and its sheer economic strength ? it is the world?s largest economic power, and so, any monopoly Europe doesn?t like just ceases to exist for all intents and purposes. Regrettably, European political leaders are perennially starstruck by anything the United States does, and won?t be challenging them any time soon, unless challenged in turn on the matter by something like the Pirate Party. (When it happens anyway, like with the ACTA defeat last year, it is due to citizen outrage ? not because of any kind of political will.)

We have China, which has a different cultural and idealistic tradition than Europe and the Americas ? Asia works on a timescale of generations and centuries, rather than one of weeks and months. There is patience to a degree unheard of in the West. The Chinese have economic clout comparable to the US and Europe, and are anything but stupid. They are copying the Intellectual Protectionism (IP) regimes of the United States, seeing how they can benefit the Chinese once China has taken the lead: protectionism works to preserve incumbence, and the Chinese understand this perfectly. So while the mechanisms may be preserved, their initial purpose may be subverted to a new geopolitical power than the one they were constructed to maintain.

Lastly, there is Latin America, which holds no love for the United States on any level after the interventionism of the past 50 years. Economically, they have half the GDP of the US or Europe, and so, they can?t compete on brute strength. However, they can compete with raw competition of the framework, and this appears to be one of the most exciting geopolitical developments in a long time.

Yesterday, it became clear that legally autonomous startup zones (plural) will be established in Honduras and other locations, with Panama and Guatemala watching the developments with great interest. A legally autonomous zone is a small location that gets to write its own experimental laws, in order to compete on a small-scale with country-level laws to find out at a laboratory scale if something works immensely better.

As many of these are planned in Latin America, and Latin America is rightly and royally sick of the copyright monopoly, I?m hopeful that one, just one, of them will ditch that monopoly concept in favor of real free trade and actual ownership rights. On an international network, it only takes one single country to declare the copyright monopoly obsolete for the entire planet to lose any and all copyright monopoly function. Now, we?ve arrived at the point where it only takes a single autonomous Internet-friendly startup zone to do so.

To illustrate, the book 1984 by George Orwell is still under copyright monopoly in the United States and Europe, but not in Australia, where it is published as public domain. This is something that is thoroughly illegal to distribute in Europe and the United States, but you can access it from there just fine, because it is legal to distribute in Australia, and Australia is connected to this thing we know as the Internet.

Now, imagine if one country ? or one autonomous zone ? desired to do this for all of humanity?s knowledge and culture, as part of free trade and free judicial competition.

The future looks immensely bright, and there is no copyright monopoly there at all. It only takes one single jurisdiction to topple the entire oppressive construct worldwide.

Ron Paul: "Country Should Panic Over Fed's Decision"

Follow @infolibnews!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src='//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,'script','twitter-wjs');
by Tyler Durden

What took Ben Bernanke sixty minutes of mumbling about tools, word-twisting, and data-manipulating to kinda-sorta admit - that in fact he is lost; Ron Paul eloquently expresses in 25 seconds in this Bloomberg TV clip. Noting that "we are creating money out of thin air," Paul sums up Bernanke's position perfectly "We've Lost Control!"

25-second quick clip

Full 5 minute clip - must watch! from Mal-investment to Bernanke's frustration...

Paul's reaction to more Federal Reserve stimulus:

"It should not surprise anybody, but it is still astounding. To me, it is so astounding that it does not collapse the markets. [Bernanke] said, 'We are in very big trouble. We are going to do something unprecedented and we believe it will not hurt the dollar.' And yet the stocks, they say 'we love this stuff.' But the dollar didn't do so well today and the real value of the dollar is measured against gold, and gold skyrocketed from its very low to its highest. It means we are weakening the dollar. We are trying to liquidate our debt through inflation. The consequence of what the Fed is doing is a lot more than just CPI. It has to do with malinvestment and people doing the wrong things at the wrong time. Believe me, there is plenty of that. The one thing that Bernanke has not achieved and it frustrates him, I can tell--is he gets no economic growth. He doesn't do anything with the unemployment numbers. I think the country should have panicked over what the Fed is saying that we have lost control and the only thing we have left is massively creating new money out of thin air, which has not worked before, and is not going to work this time."
On potential unintended consequences:
"The biggest unintended consequence is what we need is a restoration of confidence. If the Fed is expressing a lack of confidence and they do not know what to do, it does not do anything to restore confidence. People might restrain from doing anything. 'Interest rates are low. I do not have to buy my house this year. I will wait until next year. It might be a little easier. Prices might come down.' So people are restrained and it is the opposite of when you expect that housing prices are going up, and you are afraid interest rates are going up. That is why the market rate of interest is so crucial. The rate of interest should give the businessman, the entrepreneurs, the investors and the savers information. But there is no market to interest rates. That is why there is such gross distortion and why we do not have a market economy. We have a rigged economy through central economic planning by central banking. The system is failing, it was doomed to fail and we have to wake up to that fact."
On whether the Federal Reserve needs discipline:
"Short of getting rid of the Fed, which is not going to come and I wouldn't do that overnight anyway, I would say that Congress has the authority to say, do not buy debt. Do not buy any debt. The Congress can yell and scream and pander to the people. They can say the deficits are terrible and terrible. But nobody wants to cut overseas spending or food stamps for the poor. They say, 'we cannot do it without the Fed. The Fed has to buy this debt.' That is a moral hazard for the politician. If the Fed couldn't buy the debt, and interest rates would rise all of the sudden the burden would be on the Congress to get their house in order to restore confidence. Even that would panic a lot of people because live within your means? We do not like that. We like this idea that we can give people anything they want for free, so we can get reelected. Well, all of this is coming to an end."
On whether Bernanke should be pulling back liquidity and raising interest rates right now instead:
"Liquidity should be determined by the market. I don't think he should raise rates. He should just get out of rigging rates. The system is so biased. It helps the bankers who get free money and then they buy government debt. What about the people who are frightened, they do not like the stock market and they are frugal and want to take care of themselves? What do they get--1% on a CD? That is unfair. It's bad economics. You want to let the market determine interest rates and let it sort it out. People get so nervous, because we have lived so long with a Keynesian economic model of fixing interest rates and intervening in the market."
On whether Romney would do the right thing with the Federal Reserve if elected:
"So far, I have not heard that he would, but he has changed his mind before. If he gets to be president, we will keep our fingers crossed."

Was there ever any doubt that this was what they would do? It is like being surprised that a dog ate your lunch when you left the room. Did the country, which has been run now for years, if not always, by men with an agenda, not really in the best interest, of most people in the U.S. expected at 1 second to midnight, a real plan to revitalize the American economy. They shot us in the foot, in the knee, in the groin, in the belly and now are aiming at our chest and head. So if you are surprised now at the prospect of new devastation for your future and your family, I am not sure what it will take to get reality to actually make you believe. Ron Paul was literally treated like a virus by the Republican Party and media and still feels that we could legislate ourselves back to health with small non-interfering government policy. (for the agencies that monitor all communications, I am using an analogy--not advocating violence or saying that they are using actual bullets--so be nice when you put the black bag on our collective heads)

Seize Chuck Schumer's Ill-Gotten Assets & Banish Him From The Country

Chris | InformationLiberation

Senator Chuck Schumer claims Facebook's Eduardo Saverin is not paying his "fair share," that's why he wants to pass a law, the "EX-PATRIOT Act," requiring expats to fork over a third of their assets to the US government for the privilege of being allowed to leave, and after giving up all their money, they would then be banished from the country forever.

The fact of the matter is Chuck Schumer, not Eduardo Saverin, is the one who is not paying his "fair share."

Chuck Schumer has been a member of the political class his entire life, every dime he's "earned" has been taxpayer money, taxpayer money forcibly extracted from people like Eduardo Saverin against their will through threats of jail.

Chuck Schumer is not a taxpayer, he's a taxfeeder.

Chuck Schumer and his kind in government are sucking off every productive member of society, from Eduardo to a local minimum wage McDonalds worker.

Eduardo Saverin, on the other hand, turned $30,000, his entire life savings at the time, into $3,000,000,000. He funded the creation of the biggest website the world has ever known, a website half the people in the U.S. use every day which many people's lives revolve around, a website which employs thousands of productive workers and helps thousands of businesses advertise to potential customers. Eduardo Saverin has enriched not only himself through his work, but the entire world.

Chuck Schumer has done just the opposite, throughout his entire life, and now he's seeking to rob the producers of our society even further.

The fact of the matter is the U.S. would be infinitely richer if parasites like Senator Schumer were banished from the nation and their ill-gotten wealth was seized and returned to it's rightful owners, namely producers like Mr. Saverin.

US Marines Hire Brazilian Prostitute, Throw Her Out Of Moving Car Breaking Her Bones & Puncturing Her Lung, Flee Country & Face No Accountability

American marines injured a Brazilian prostitute after throwing her out of an official Embassy car, it was reported today.

Romilda Ferreira was left with a broken collar bone, two broken ribs and a punctured lung after the incident in Brazil's capital Brasilia.

The three marines on a U.S. Embassy security team, and an Embassy staff member, were pulled out of the country before police were able to press charges, according to Brazil's Jornal Nacional programme.

[...]According to a Brazilian police investigation, the four U.S. Embassy officials had visited a nightclub in the centre of Brasilia where they had hired a group of prostitutes.

One of the Americans and at least one woman left the club by taxi, but Ms Ferreira and another women got into an official U.S. Embassy van with the other three men.

As they pulled away there was a discussion about how much the women were to be paid, and one of the marines pushed Ms Ferreira out of the car, where she ended up being run over by the vehicle.

Speaking to the Jornal Nacional news programme, Romilda said she tried to hold on to the door but was dragged under the wheels.

She said: 'I tried to get up and grabbed the doorknob. That was when they told the driver to go. Then I felt my leg burning. I let go and fell underneath the van. I hit my head and passed out.'

The Americans then allegedly drove away without offering assistance.

Police investigating the incident requested the arrest of the driver of the van and one of the marines for bodily injury and failure to rescue.

But U.S. authorities removed the four men from the country before they could be charged with the crimes.

[...]Speaking to reporters in Brasilia, Mr Panetta said the men were pulled from the country, two of the marines had their ranks reduced and the embassy staff member was removed from his post.

He added that the embassy had tracked Ms Ferreira down and paid for her medical expenses.

He added: 'This incident was fully investigated and all those involved were punished. They are no longer in this country. This type of behaviour is unacceptable.'

He said he had 'no tolerance for that kind of conduct. Where it takes place you can be sure that we will act to make sure that they are punished.'
