Multiple Eyewitnesses Claim Unarmed Wichita Man had Hands Up Prior to Being Killed by Cops

Wichita, Kansas ? Witnesses in the shooting death of unarmed 23-year-old John Paul Quintero have come forward to refute police statements regarding the shooting death of Quintero.

The incident, which took place on Saturday night, began when Quintero's family called 911, saying Quintero was under the influence of alcohol and had threatened them with a knife at a party.

According to police, Quintero was "belligerent" and wouldn't comply with the two officers who arrived at the scene eight minutes later, while seated in an SUV with his father, parked in front of the house.

Ted McAdams and his wife live in the unit behind where the party was going on. They ran outside after they heard screaming. McAdams claims to have witnessed the tragic events leading up to the death of Quintero.

According to McAdams, Quintero was "trying to talk to the male officer with compliance" and "had his arms up until he got tasered, [when] his arms went down to his side."

Multiple witnesses have stated that Quintero had his hands up and seemed to be compliant, until another officer employed a taser on him, subsequently causing Quintero to lower his hands, which then lead to Martin shooting him in the chest with an AR-15, according to KAKE.com.

Police claim Quintero reached toward an officer?s waistband, but McAdams refutes that statement, claiming that he saw the incident and never saw Quintero make such a move.

It must be noted, that claiming a person reached for an officer?s waistband/weapon, is one of the standard police refrains when attempting to justify use of deadly force in the killing unarmed citizens.

A former state school board member from Wichita and vice chairman of the city's Racial Profiling Advisory Board, Walt Chappell, told the Wichita Eagle he had a feeling the officers "made a conscious decision to escalate rather than de-escalate."

The mere fact that the female officer walked up with a rifle "would indicate to me they were already loaded for bear," Chappell said.

McAdams says he?s not alone in thinking this situation was taken too far.

?After that all the neighbors and I threw a little fit at the cops because I?ve got a wife and a newborn and the safety issue and not just that, the way the cops handled themselves.?

He added, ?If he was told to do something, yeah he should?ve done it, but that officer had, to my advice and my suggestion, she shouldn?t have ever shot him.?

Another witness, Dustin Deckard, was driving home on Saturday afternoon when he witnessed a cop aiming her rifle at an unarmed man with his hands up.

"It was clearly a younger man in his early 20s of Hispanic descent, and he was wearing a blue jersey and he had his hands up," said Deckard, referring to the Wichita Police.

"He was behind the SUV, and the female officer was mostly directly in front of him, a little bit to his left. Both the officers were on either side of him, but he was facing the female officer who had her rifle up, and she was looking down the sight."

Deckard added, "It was very eerie, because the shooting must have occurred seconds after. When I passed, I slowed down, so I only got a couple seconds of a view."

Chappell made a very clear point when he stated,

"You don't go in ready to shoot first and ask questions later. There's a lot of things you can do before you ever pull out a weapon.?

The militarized, us vs. them, mindset of US cops, which escalate already tense situations into outright violent altercations, is a plague upon law enforcement and the public that they claim to serve.

Here is audio of the initial 9-1-1 call by the family. All they wanted was help in stopping a fight, instead, a young man was gunned down.

The "Economic Recovery" Continues: Businesses Are Being Destroyed Faster Than They Are Being Created

What would you say about an economy where businesses are shutting down faster than they are opening?? Well, a shocking new study released by the Brookings Institution indicates that this is exactly what is happening in the United States.? We are absolutely killing small businesses and the entrepreneurial spirit in this country, and as you will see below, the number of self-employed Americans has been on a downward trend for a decade even though our population has been steadily growing.? Traditionally, small businesses have been the primary engine of job growth in this nation, so the fact that study after study has found that small business creation is being crippled in the United States is a really bad sign for our economic future.

Personally, I write about our long-term economic decline nearly every day, but even I had no idea that businesses were being destroyed faster than they were being created.? According to the Brookings Institution, this first started happening?in 2009...

The American economy is less entrepreneurial now than at any point in the last three decades. That's the conclusion of a new study out from the Brookings Institution, which looks at the rates of new business creation and destruction since 1978.

Not only that, but during the most recent three years of the study -- 2009, 2010 and 2011 -- businesses were collapsing faster than they were being formed, a first.

And this mirrors an earlier study conducted by economist Tim Kane.? According to his analysis of U.S. Department of Labor data, the following is how the decline in the number of new business jobs per one thousand Americans breaks down by presidential administration...

Bush Sr.: 11.3

Clinton: 11.2

Bush Jr.: 10.8

Obama: 7.8

As you can see, this is a problem that has been building for decades and that has accelerated under the Obama administration.

We are strangling small business creation to death, and as a result the number of Americans that are self-employed just keeps going down.? Just check out this chart...

And keep in mind that throughout this entire time the U.S. population has been growing.? So the numbers in the chart above should be going up steadily as the population grows.? But instead they have just kept going down.

Meanwhile, the "economic recovery" is continuing in the corporate world as well.

On Tuesday, we learned that Office Depot is going to be closing 400 stores.

Why would that happen if the economy was actually getting better?

When this was announced, shares of Office Depot rose about 20 percent.

I can never understand why that happens.? You would think that when a business makes an announcement that essentially says "our business is failing" that it would cause people to dump the stock.

In any event, this comes on the heels of an announcement by Staples back in March that it was going to shut down 225 stores in the United States and Canada.

So where will we buy our pens and paper from now on?

If the economy really was "recovering", you would think that demand for office supplies would actually be on the rise.

But the only places where the economy is "recovering" is in places such as Washington D.C., New York City and San Francisco.

Those at the top of the pyramid are doing well, but almost everyone else in the country is really suffering right now.

When you kill off small businesses and the entrepreneurial spirit, it tends to increasingly funnel money to the very top of the food chain.? And this is precisely what is happening in America at this point.? In a recent article, Charles Hugh Smith?included a chart that shows how average household net worth in the U.S. breaks down by quartile...

Bottom 25%: $4,600

From 25% to 50%: $21,700

From 50% to 75%: $78,900

From 75% to 90%: $242,800

Top 10%: $1,606,600

As you can see, the bottom 50 percent are really not that much above zero at all.? In the old days, it seemed like almost everyone was "middle class" in America, but now that is rapidly changing.

We can see this increasing divide in the real estate market as well.? According to?Bloomberg, sales of million dollar homes are booming, but sales of homes at the low end are plunging...

"Million-dollar homes in the U.S. are selling at double their historical average while middle-class property demand stumbles, showing that the housing recovery is mirroring America's wealth divide.

Purchases costing $1 million or more rose 7.8 percent in March from a year earlier, according to data released last week by the National Association of Realtors. Transactions for $250,000 or less, which represent almost two-thirds of the market, plunged 12 percent in the period"

So this explains why it is almost impossible to find an affordable home in San Francisco, but the overall homeownership rate in the United States has dropped to the lowest level in 19 years.

But even in our wealthy enclaves there are signs of deep economic trouble.? For example,?in New York City the number of homeless children has soared to a new all-time high...

They're just like other kids except they have a secret. They are homeless.? Children are living hidden lives in plain sight. They are part a growing number of low income families who find themselves with no way out but they are working hard to find a solution.

It's a big issue. And it's growing. More than 23,000 children sleep in homeless shelters every night, an all-time high, according to the Coalition for the Homeless.

The only "recovery" being experienced in America is the one that is happening on Wall Street, in boardrooms in Silicon Valley and in the halls of power in Washington.

In the rest of the country, retail stores are closing at the fastest pace that we have seen since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, 20 percent of all families do not have a single member that is employed and?49 million Americans are dealing with food insecurity.

There is no way that we are ever going to have a broad-based economic recovery in this nation if we continue to destroy small businesses.? They are the lifeblood of any economy and they are the primary engine of job creation.

Sadly, our politicians seem completely clueless about all of this.? So they will continue to do the same things that they have always been doing and then wonder why the economy never seems to turn around.

Father Says He's Being Jailed For Paying Too Much Child Support & Over Visiting His Son [Updated]

Reading the article at the link, it looks little differently.

"I discovered for some reason his employer was withholding a large amount some weeks a small amount some weeks a zero amount some weeks," says Hall's attorney Tyesha Elam.

So Hall quickly paid almost 3 grand in back child support.

When Hall and his ex were in Judge Lisa Millard's court last November he owed nothing. "Opposing counsel testified twice that he's all paid up," says Elam.

But the attorney representing the child's mother wanted Hall to pay her three grand in attorney fees and Judge Millard agreed.

Court documents also reveal Hall wasn't following the court's scheduled times to pick his son up for visitation."

No word of overpayment; it looks like Clifford was underpaying for some time (blaming the employer), and that's why the mother sued. When Clifford learned about lawsuit, he quickly paid up, but the mother wanted attorney fees, which is reasonable. So the prison term seems to be for _under_payment before the lawsuit plus for visiting not on schedule.

That sounds more logical , if reports on the site are not verified the credibility of the site comes in to question . There are enough "real" stories out there without having to mis-represent or distort the truth , after all thats what we come here to read . I agree, I've been coming to this site for years now and have to say I'm very disappointed at the mis-representation. 75145 is right.

I know for certain that there are thousands of people who traffic this site regularly and i'm sure many of them are loyal readers so there is no need to exaggerate, distort or mis-represent the titles to attract readership or keep readers interested.

Yes, I agree there are some inaccuracies in the report. I didn't check it enough before posting it, my apologies. The over paid claim came from his lawyer who said he "over paid" and "over visited."

"I'm like he couldn't have gotten a worse result," Elam says. "He could have gone in there with a monkey and gotten a better result. What did I do that my client has over paid over visited and is now paying 3 thousand dollars in attorney fees and is going to jail for 6 months."

This show how screwed up this legal system is. If he didn't pay his child support, he would be just like a lot of these dead beat men out here that is not providing for their children. They would be out here walking around free. This is why some of these judges out here need to retire, because they have gotten so comfortable and power hungry with their positions. 190197, the link to the judge's website pops up a 404 error... site taken down, or is the link wrong? 2423, looks like they hid all the content from her website probably due to the backlash of the story breaking out. What a disgrace to & misuse of the judicial system!

Cop Drives Into Pole Going 70-75 MPH, Wasn't Wearing Seatbelt, Wasn't Responding To Emergency, Collects Workers Comp & Still Being Paid

Here's an example of one of those speeding cops 20/20 caught on camera. This cop drove his car into a pole while speeding, wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and wasn't responding to an emergency, yet he's collecting workers comp on the taxpayers dime and still being paid while the police "investigate."

Patch.com reports:

An internal affairs investigation will decide whether Deputy Adewale Olukoju is punished after he drove into a Marguerite light pole at 70-75 MPH.

Deputy Adewale Olukoju, 44, who was not wearing a seatbelt when he sped 70-75 MPH into a light pole in June, continues to collect a paycheck during the investigation, OCSD Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

Olukoju has not returned to work though, Hallock said, because he is on leave for worker's compensation.

Olukoju was ejected from his police cruiser after he crashed while traveling south on Marguerite near Vista Del Lago. He was not responding to an emergency, authorities said. The deputy is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

DOJ Decided To Ratchet Up Case Against Aaron Swartz Because He Spoke Out Publicly About Being Innocent

A few weeks ago, we wrote about the MIT report concerning the case against Aaron Swartz. A number of people have picked up on some really questionable things in the report. One incredible claim made in it was that Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Heymann, who was running the prosecution against Swartz, apparently admitted that he really only ramped up his efforts against Swartz to punish Swartz and the organization he founded, Demand Progress, for having the audacity to discuss the case publicly and explain why Swartz believed he didn't do anything wrong. Here's the passage from the report:

The prosecutor said that, pre-indictment, he had wanted to approach the case on a human level, not punitively. To this extent he made an extremely reasonable proposal, and was "dumb-founded" by Swartz's response.

The prosecutor said that the straw that broke the camel's back was that when he indicted the case, and allowed Swartz to come to the courthouse as opposed to being arrested, Swartz used the time to post a "wild Internet campaign" in an effort to drum up support. This was a "foolish" move that moved the case "from a human one-on-one level to an institutional level." The lead prosecutor said that on the institutional level cases are harder to manage both internally and externally

MIT used this to explain why it thought that any public statements it might make in support of Swartz would make the case worse for him, because Heymann, in his petty vindictive mind, might view it as a further "wild" public campaign by Swartz. Leaving aside that this makes absolutely no sense at all, the actions of Heymann are particularly despicable here, suggesting that merely professing your innocence to crimes that you believe you are innocent of, should lead to much greater prosecution.

This passage has now caught the attention of Rep. Darrell Issa, and he is asking Attorney General Eric Holder about whether or not the DOJ directly comes down hard on those who exercise their First Amendment rights in the face of questionable prosecutions:

"The implication that the Department ratcheted up the prosecution by moving the case to 'an institutional level' after it discovered the petition by Demand Progress suggests that the Department acted in a retaliatory manner and that it bases its charging decisions on externalities such as an Internet campaign," Issa, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, wrote in his letter to Holder.

"The suggestions that prosecutors did in fact seek to make an example out of Aaron Swartz because Demand Progress exercised its First Amendment rights in publicly supporting him raises new questions about the Department's handling of the case," Issa wrote.

A separate point that comes out in the report that is equally as absurd was that Heymann believed that the case required some jail time as punishment because it "involves the unauthorized downloading of intellectual property that cost millions of dollars to create." This is ridiculous on so many levels. First of all, MIT made those works freely available to anyone on campus, so the argument that it was "unauthorized" remains very questionable. Second, the "cost millions of dollars to create" argument is simply laughable. Nearly all of that was publicly funded by taxpayer money, which is supposed to lead to the enrichment of public learning and knowledge -- the exact thing that Swartz appeared to be focused on. This ridiculous belief that he needed to be put in prison because of the monetary cost of creating these educational works is astounding. And sad, given the eventual outcome.

It's no secret that the DOJ often seems to think that "intellectual property" laws are designed to protect the moneyed interests of copyright holders, but that's not what the Constitution or the law says. At the very least, the people hired as US Attorney's to represent the US government should know better than to ratchet up prosecution for people who are expressing their First Amendment rights and doing things that directly align with the Constitutional reasons for copyright law.

Assistant US Attorney Stephen Heymann is a disgrace to the Constitution he's supposed to be defending.

Phoenix Cop Snatches Camera from Man after Being Photographed Jaywalking

Raymond Michael had just left a court hearing over his previous arrest for photographing the federal courthouse when he spotted a Phoenix police officer jaywalking, so he snapped a photo.

That resulted in the cop snatching his video camera from him, then pulling out his own camera where he photographed Michael, before handing back the video camera ten minutes later and allowing him to be on his way.

Unfortunately, the cop turned off Michael?s camera, so we are unable to hear what took place during those ten minutes, but Michael says they kept demanding his identification and he kept asking if he was being detained.

?They said you are being detained for taking photos,? Michael said in a telephone interview with Photography is Not a Crime Sunday afternoon.

When he wouldn?t give them his identification, they snapped his photo, apparently to add him to him to their database of suspected camera-wielding terrorists, and returned his camera, allowing him to leave.

The fact that they let him go shows they knew all along they didn?t have enough to arrest him.

Illinois Citizens Still Being Arrested For Filming Cops Despite Court Ruling Which Blocked Unconstitutional Law

Illinois citizens are still being arrested for recording police officers despite a 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last year that blocked the enforcement of the law on the grounds that it was unconstitutional.

Following yesterday?s story concerning residents of Naperville who attempted to resist utility workers invading their private property to install so-called ?smart meters? ? which have been linked with health issues ? it emerged that one of the refusniks, Malia "Kim" Bendis, was arrested on attempted eavesdropping charges for recording police officers during the incident.

The irony of citizens being arrested for supposedly ?eavesdropping? on cops in public where there is no expectation of privacy, while simultaneously the government forcibly installs devices on people?s property that really do eavesdrop on them in total violation of the 4th amendment, is staggering. Remember ? this is a state that threatens to send people to prison for life for recording police officers.

Bendis filmed her friend?s confrontation with city workers and police but at no time attempted to interfere in their actions. The video clip shows an officer asking Bendis not to film him, an order with which she immediately complies.

However, the Chicago Tribune reports that Bendis was arrested and ?Charged with two misdemeanors -- attempted eavesdropping and resisting a peace officer.?

The state of Illinois is still directing its police officers to enforce a law that has repeatedly been found unconstitutional.

As the PINAC blog notes, ?Bendis was charged with misdemeanor eavesdropping which indicates they may have kept the law intact but reduced it to a misdemeanor from a felony. Or more likely means the newspaper wasn't very clear in their reporting,? adding that the Illinois legislature introduced a "technical change" to the law a day before the incident, but that no one seems to be aware of what exactly the change is.

In May 2012, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the enforcement of a law that made it a felony to film police officers in the state of Illinois. This followed a case involving Illinois resident Michael Allison ? who at one point was facing life in jail for recording cops.

?The Illinois eavesdropping statute restricts far more speech than necessary to protect legitimate privacy interests; as applied to the facts alleged here, it likely violates the First Amendment's free speech and free-press guarantees,? wrote Judge Diane Sykes.

Furthermore, when Cook County State Attorney Anita Alvarez appealed the ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman re-affirmed it. In states all across the country, Americans arrested for filming police officers in public have won their cases. In August 2011, the First Circuit Court of Appeals also ruled that it is not illegal for citizens to videotape police officers when they are on public duty.

Eavesdropping charges against Illinois resident Tiawanda Moore for recording patrol officers were dropped in August 2011, after a "Criminal Court jury quickly repudiated the prosecution's case, taking less than an hour to acquit Moore on both eavesdropping counts."

Despite numerous different courts not only in Illinois but across the United States continually ruling that it is not illegal to record police officers in public, Americans continue to be arrested for doing so.

This sets a dangerous new precedent in America?s decline towards an authoritarian state, where laws that have clearly been blocked as unconstitutional are being enforced illegally on a whim for the convenience of police officers to abuse the rights of citizens without their actions being documented.

Merely Being Arrested Can Ruin Your Life

"You never have a `right' to resist arrest," insists Des Moines-based attorney Harley Erbe (who is wrong, of course). There are two reasons why Mundanes must immediately submit to "commands" issued by the state's costumed enforcers, Erbe explains:

"First, officers' safety is a [sic] paramount consideration. People always think that their arrests are unfair or unlawful; if citizens then had a right to duke it out with law enforcement every time they held that belief then a lot of officers and citizens would be hurt."

The word "paramount" means "supreme." Thus Erbe is saying that whenever an armed state functionary decides to abduct you at gunpoint, his safety is always the foremost consideration.

Second, Erbe continues, "the streets are not the time or place for a debate on the legality of an arrest or whether the arrestee has committed a crime.? Those are matters to be determined?in courtrooms by judges and juries."

This is a variant of the advice that used to be offered to rape victims: It's safer to submit than to fight back, because resisting will only make matters worse. It also ignores the fact that merely being arrested is sufficient to ruin an innocent person's life -- or at least to steal a considerable portion of it. This is underscored by the case of Pittsburgh resident Sara Reedy, who was both the victim of a sexual assault and an unlawful arrest.

Eight years ago, Reedy -- at the time a 19-year-old expectant mother -- was robbed and sexually assaulted at gunpoint while working at a convenience store. When the police interviewed her in the hospital, they refused to believe her account, insisting that she had invented the story in order to cover for the theft of about $600 from the till. Rather than pursuing Reedy's assailant, the Pittsburgh police detective -- who belonged to an agency known to harbor rapists in its ranks -- arrested her and charged her with robbery and "false reporting." Although Reedy wasn't prosecuted, she lost her job -- and, eventually, her marriage.

Some months later, the criminal who assaulted Reedy was arrested after he forced himself on another victim. The perpetrator eventually confessed to a number of earlier assaults, including the one against Reedy. She spent seven years and a great deal of money seeking redress through the courts, eventually winning a large civil settlement that fell short of adequately compensating her for what she had experienced.

A recent investigation by the Gainesville Sun found that local police agencies make hundreds of entirely unnecessary arrests every year. The victims are arrested without charge, but the arrest is instantly noted in databases that are used for background checks for employment and housing. Even if the victim's criminal record is expunged, the digital trail cannot be erased.

Many of those arrests are summary punishment for "contempt of cop." Others are made for cynical reasons related to career advancement within the state's punitive priesthood.

Officer Jeff McAdams of the Gainesville Police Department, who is ?president of the Gator Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, told the Sun that GPD Chief Tony Jones expects his officers to "take control of their zones" -- which means making exemplary arrests intended to send a message, rather than led to criminal prosecutions. He also explained that needless arrests of this kind are "encouraged" by supervisors and that building a statistically impressive arrest record is a key to receiving "officer of the month" awards and similar honors.

As defense attorney Craig DeThomasis told the Sun, "We currently live in a world where an arrest destroys somebody's life." That's a small price to pay, apparently, to ensure the safety and enhance the career prospects of the incomparably precious people who compose the state's enforcement caste.

About 400 officers are killed in the line of duty each year. They signed up and got paid for a DANGEROUS job before they ever hit the streets. They got the insurance pay-out when they got killed. Family taken care of forever on taxpayer money.

About twice that many officers commit suicide each year.

Officer safety my ass.

Why should an officer's life and safety be placed above anyone else's? Is his life worth more and his safety more important than that of a grocery store employee, gas station attendant, or any other Joe Blow out there?

Man dies after being assaulted by cops; officers placed on paid leave

Five months after cops in North Chicago, Illinois violently arrested an unarmed man only for him to die from his injuries days later, the city?s mayor has announced that seven police officers will be placed on paid administrative leave.

The seven North Chicago officers linked to the November 13 death of 45-year-old Darrin Hanna were sent home with pay this week as authorities consider if any further disciplinary action should be taken by the police force.

The officers in question have been on desk-duty for the five months since Hanna?s passing and will now indefinitely be off the beat until a decision is made. In the interim, however, Tristan Borzick, Jason Geryol, Gary Grayer, Marc Keske, Arthur Strong, Brandon Yost and Sgt. Salvatore Cecala will all continue to receive full pay.

North Chicago, Illinois Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr. announced the news at a press conference on Tuesday. Only days earlier, the Reverend Jesse Jackson had led a rally outside the Windy City asking for the mayor?s resignation over his lack of action in the case.

"The criminals who engaged in this activity are still policemen. They still have a badge, and a gun, and authority,? Jackson said at this weekend?s rally, reports WGN News.

Jackson also equated the death of Hanna with another controversial case in the news as of late; ?We had Trayvon in Florida, and now Darrin in North Chicago,? Jackson said.

On Friday last week, the US Department of Justice said that it is now investigating the incident and will soon decide if a formal probe will be necessary to dig deeper into the events that led to the death of Hanna last year and if the officers should be held accountable for their actions. Responding to the DoJ?s news, Mayor Rockingham said he was in favor of a resolution that he hoped would ?possibly calm the community.?

Police were dispatched to investigate a domestic abuse complaint at a North Chicago home last year. According to the officers that responded to the call, Hanna rushed them with clenched fists, prompting them to respond with batons and Tasers. Although the cops claim that their stun guns were only used two or three times, an autopsy identified 11 Taser scars on Hanna?s back.

A week later, Hanna died. According to the Lake County coroner?s office, physical restraint and Taser shocks were both factors in the man?s death. Evidence of cocaine use was also uncovered, report says.

Authorities allege that Hanna was attempting to injure his pregnant girlfriend when authorities responded. On Monday, attorneys for six of the officers released a news bulletin supporting their clients.

"North Chicago police saved the lives of (Hanna's girlfriend) and her unborn child and they acted appropriately when her cocaine-abusing assailant aggressively resisted arrest,? reads this week?s statement from the offices of the DeAno & Scarry law firm.

The Chicago Tribune reports that all seven officers will stay on administrative leave until the department decides if disciplinary action is necessary. Reverend Jackson has publically called the cops? current situation a ?paid vacation.?

"We plan to stay until reasonable justice has been done," Rev. Jackson told a crowd at North Chicago?s First Corinthian Church on Friday, where he also asked ralliers to sleep outside City Hall in protest.

Once Again, The Administration Vindictively Charges A Whistleblower As Being A Spy

This is getting ridiculous. When President Obama was campaigning and even when he first took office, he claimed that it was a priority to support whistleblowing activities. And yet, as President, he has been ridiculously aggressive in pushing vindictive criminal lawsuits against whistleblowers -- often by abusing the Espionage Act. The Espionage Act is supposed to be used against spies. But the Obama Justice Department has used it over and over again against whistleblowers in a purely vindictive manner. In fact, he's used it to bring charges against whistleblowers more often than every other President combined. This strategy turned out to be a disaster in the Thomas Drake case (which was initiated by President Bush, but continued with strong support by President Obama), where the case completely collapsed, once it became clear that the charges were nothing but a vindictive attack on a whistleblower.

Apparently the Obama administration has not learned its lesson. It has now used the Espionage Act to go after a former CIA agent, John Kiriakou, who blew the whistle on the CIA's waterboarding torture regime. This now makes it the sixth Espionage Act prosecution of a whistleblower brought by the Obama administration. All other presidents before him used it a total of 3 times. As the Government Accountability Project notes, the really stunning thing in all of this is that Kiriakou will be the only person prosecuted in relation to the use of waterboarding -- and simply for blowing the whistle on it.

if you torture a prisoner, you will not be held criminally liable, but if you blow the whistle on torture, you risk criminal prosecution under the Espionage Act.

Something seems very, very wrong about this.

Feds order California pot dispensaries to shut down - despite being legal under state laws

Federal prosecutors have launched a crackdown on pot dispensaries in California, warning the stores that they must shut down in 45 days or face criminal charges.

They also threatened to confiscate their property even if they are operating legally under the state's 15-year-old medical marijuana law.

In an escalation of the ongoing conflict between the U.S. government and the nation's burgeoning medical marijuana industry, California's four U.S. attorneys sent letters on Wednesday and Thursday notifying at least 16 pot shops or their landlords that they are violating federal drug laws, even though medical marijuana is legal in California.

The attorneys are scheduled to announce their coordinated crackdown at a Friday news conference.Their offices refused to confirm the closure orders.

Copies of the letters that a prosecutor sent to 12 San Diego dispensaries were obtained.

They state that federal law 'takes precedence over state law and applies regardless of the particular uses for which a dispensary is selling and distributing marijuana'.

'Under United States law, a dispensary's operations involving sales and distribution of marijuana are illegal and subject to criminal prosecution and civil enforcement actions,' letters signed by U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy in San Diego read.

'Real and personal property involved in such operations are subject to seizure by and forfeiture to the United States ... regardless of the purported purpose of the dispensary.'

12 Things That The Mainstream Media Is Being Strangely Quiet About Right Now

As the mainstream media continues to be obsessed with Anthony Weiner and his bizarre adventures on Twitter, much more serious events are happening around the world that are getting very little attention.  In America today, if the mainstream media does not cover something it is almost as if it never happened.

Right now, the worst nuclear disaster in human history continues to unfold in Japan , U.S. nuclear facilities are being threatened by flood waters, the U.S. military is bombing Yemen, gigantic cracks in the earth are appearing all over the globe and the largest wildfire in Arizona history is causing immense devastation.  But Anthony Weiner, Bristol Palin and Miss USA are what the mainstream media want to tell us about and most Americans are buying it.

In times like these, it is more important than ever to think for ourselves.  The corporate-owned mainstream media is not interested in looking out for us.  Rather, they are going to tell us whatever fits with the agenda that their owners are pushing.

That is why more Americans than ever are turning to the alternative media.  Americans are hungry for the truth, and they know that the amount of truth that they get from the mainstream media continues to decline.

The following are 12 things that the mainstream media is being strangely quiet about right now….

#1 The crisis at the Fort Calhoun nuclear facility in Nebraska has received almost no attention in the national mainstream media.

Back on June 7th, there was a fire at Fort Calhoun.  The official story is that the fire was in an electrical switchgear room at the plant.  The facility lost power to a pump that cools the spent fuel pool for approximately 90 minutes.  According to the Omaha Public Power District, the fire was quickly extinguished and no radioactive material was released.

The following sequence of events is directly from the Omaha Public Power District website….

* There was no such imminent danger with the Fort Calhoun Station spent-fuel pool.
* Due to a fire in an electrical switchgear room at FCS on the morning of June 7, the plant temporarily lost power to a pump that cools the spent-fuel pool.
* The fire-suppression system in that switchgear room operated as designed, extinguishing the fire quickly.
* FCS plant operators switched the spent-fuel pool cooling system to an installed backup pump about 90 minutes after the loss of power.
* During the interruption of cooling, temperature of the pool increased a few degrees, but the pool was never in danger of boiling.
* Due to this situation, FCS declared an Alert at about 9:40 a.m. on June 7.
* An alert is the second-least-serious of four emergency classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
* At about 1:15 p.m. on June 7, FCS operators declared they had taken all appropriate measures to safely return to the previously declared Notification of Unusual Event emergency classification. (See first item above.)

But the crisis at Fort Calhoun is not over.  Right now, the nuclear facility at Fort Calhoun is essentially an island. It is surrounded by rising flood waters from the Missouri River.

Officials claim that there is no danger and that they are prepared for the river to rise another ten feet.

The Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, Nebraska is also being threatened by rising flood waters.  A “Notification of Unusual Event” was declared at Cooper Nuclear Station this morning at 4:02.  This notification was issued because the Missouri River’s water level reached 42.5 feet.

Right now the facility is operating normally and officials don’t expect a crisis.

But considering what has been going on at Fukushima, it would be nice if we could have gotten a lot more coverage of these events by the mainstream media.

#2 Most Americans are aware that the U.S. is involved in wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya.  However, the truth is that the U.S. military is also regularly bombing Yemen and parts of Pakistan.  If you count the countries where the U.S. has special forces and/or covert operatives on the ground, the U.S. is probably “active” in more countries in the Middle East than it is not.  Now there are even persistent rumors that U.S. ground units are being prepared to go into Libya.  Are we watching the early stages of World War 3 unfold before our eyes in slow motion?

#3 The crisis at Fukushima continues to get worse.  Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear industry senior vice president, recently made the following statement about the Fukushima disaster….

“Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind”

TEPCO has finally admitted that this disaster has released more radioactive material into the environment than Chernobyl did.  That makes Fukushima the worst nuclear disaster of all time, and it is far from over. Massive amounts of water is being poured into the spent fuel pools in order to keep them cool.  This is creating “hundreds of thousands of tons of highly radioactive sea water” that has got to go somewhere.  Inevitably much of it will get into the ground and into the sea. Arnold Gundersen says that the scope of this problem is almost unimaginable….

“TEPCO announced they had a melt through. A melt down is when the fuel collapses to the bottom of the reactor, and a melt through means it has melted through some layers. That blob is incredibly radioactive, and now you have water on top of it. The water picks up enormous amounts of radiation, so you add more water and you are generating hundreds of thousands of tons of highly radioactive water.” The mainstream media is not paying as much attention to Fukushima these days, but that doesn’t mean that it is not a major league nightmare.

Elevated levels of radiation are being reported by Japanese bloggers all over eastern Japan.  There are reports of sick children all over the region.  One adviser to the government of Japan says that an area approximately 17 times the size of Manhattan is probably going to be uninhabitable. Of course the mainstream media has been telling us all along that Fukushima is nothing to be too concerned about and that authorities in Japan have everything under control. If the mainstream media is not going to tell us the truth, how are they going to continue to have credibility?

#4 Members of Congress continue to mention Christians as a threat to national security.  For example, during a recent Congressional hearing U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee warned that “Christian militants” might try to “bring down the country” and that such groups need to be investigated.

#5 China’s eastern province of Zhejiang has experienced that worst flooding that it has seen in 55 years.  2 million people have already been forced to leave their homes.  China has already been having huge problems with their crops over the past few years and this is only going to make things worse.

#6 Thanks to the Dodd-Frank Act, over the counter trading of gold and silver is going to be illegal starting on July 15th.  Or at least that is what some companies apparently now believe.  The following is an excerpt from an email that Forex.com recently sent out to their customers….

Apparently, Section 742(a) of the Dodd-Frank Act prohibits anyone “from entering into, or offering to enter into, a transaction in any commodity with a person that is not an eligible contract participant or an eligible commercial entity, on a leveraged or margined basis.” So what impact is this going to have on the gold and silver markets?

Nobody is quite sure yet.

#7 All over the world, huge cracks are appearing for no discernible reason.  For example, a massive crack that is approximately 3 kilometers long recent appeared in southern Peru.  Also, a 500 foot long crack suddenly appeared recently in the state of Michigan.  When you also throw in all of the gigantic sinkholes that have been opening all over the world, it is easy to conclude that the planet is becoming very unstable.

#8 According to U.S. Forest Service officials, the largest wildfire in Arizona state history has now covered more than 500,000 acres.  But based on the coverage it is being given by the mainstream media you would think that it is a non-event.

#9 There are reports that North Korea has tested a “super EMP weapon” which would be capable of taking out most of the U.S. power grid in a single shot.  The North Koreans are apparently about to conduct another nuclear test and that has some Obama administration officials very concerned.

#10 All over the United States, “active shooter drills” are being conducted in our public schools.  Often, most of the students are not told that these drills are fake.  Instead, students often go through hours of terror as they think a hostage situation or a shooting spree is really taking place.

#11 NASA has just launched a “major” preparedness initiative for all NASA personnel.  The following is an excerpt about this plan from NASA’s own website….

A major initiative has been placed on Family/Personal Preparedness for all NASA personnel. The NASA Family/Personal Preparedness Program is designed to provide awareness, resources, and tools to the NASA Family (civil servants and contractors) to prepare for an emergency situation. The most important assets in the successful completion of NASA’s mission are our employees’ and their families. We are taking the steps to prepare our workforce, but it is your personal obligation to prepare yourself and your families for emergencies.

#12 Over the past week over 40 temporary “no fly zones” have been declared by the FAA.  This is very highly unusual.  Nobody seems to know exactly why this is happening.

So what do all of these things mean?

It would be nice if the mainstream media would examine some of these important issues more closely and do some honest reporting on them.
