Cops On A Power Trip Arresting People For No ID and Videotaping

We were 4 bikers on our way back from Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown, PA. My friend and I get pulled over for crossing on double yellow.After waiting for citations for 10-15 minutes the other 2 bikers (my brother and other friend) walk up to see whats going on and just to wait with us. They stand off to side as instructed by the officer outside the vehicle. After another 5 minutes or so of casual conversation among ourselves and the officer outside. He asks for ID from Ryan, who asks, ?I am required to show you ID?? The officer responds, ?I am a police officer.? Ryan says, ?I understand that but whats the reason.? He responds by saying, ?You came on my scene?. He asks for his name which he gives. At this point the other officer gets out of the squad car and asks whats going on. The original officer says that Ryan isn?t showing ID and immediately the new and older officer says, If you don?t show us ID right now we can arrest you, tow your bike, and then have to pay bail. This is when my brother says, ?someone get this on video?. So I pull out my phone and the following occurs.

After the Video: They seize my phone and play the video, which has audio obviously. I am then arrested for audio taping them without their consent (Wiretapping Law), which according to the ACLU does not apply to officers doing their regular duties in public. So I?m arrested as well. Eventually my friend calls his police officer friend who talks with the arresting officer. Then we are both released as long as we give them the video and delete it. So they continue to seize my phone and make us follow them back to the station to transfer the file. After not being able to transfer it due to software issues the original officer takes a video of my video with his iPhone. I am then told to delete the video so I stealthy slide to the next video, which the arresting officer created while seizing my phone (he had no idea how to use a smartphone) and deleted that one. Now I?m sharing this ridiculous video of a cop on a power trip arresting innocent civilians after they visited a 9/11 memorial.

Liberals And Conservatives Switch Positions On NSA Surveillance Depending On If 'Their Guy' Is In Power

Orin Kerr has pointed out that people who self-identify themselves as "liberals" or "conservatives" seem to shift their opinion on NSA surveillance depending on whether or not it's "their guy" in the White House. That is, back when George W. Bush was President, "Democrats" disapproved of the NSA's surveillance activities, with only 27% approving it. "Republicans" on the other hand, had a 75% approval of the NSA's activities, which were known to include warrantless wiretapping. Fast forward to today, and we have "liberals" being split down the middle between being concerned and not concerned, but conservatives having 77% either "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about the surveillance (48% falling into the "very concerned") category. Kerr notes that the two surveys may not be completely comparable -- the questions were not identical, and one study was based on political party, while the other was based on ideology (which might not match up). But, at the very least, it does suggest a general sense that people are much more comfortable with surveillance when "their guy" is in power, and against it when they dislike the President.

That's troubling on any number of levels, but hopefully it serves as a point to a useful tool in convincing those who trust "their guy" not to abuse the system: just ask them how comfortable they'll be when "the other guy" is in power after the next election?

U.S. Government Loaning $500M for Solar Power Projects -- In India

The U.S. Export-Import Bank, an independent agency of the federal government, says that it has $500 million in loans in the ?pipeline? to fund new solar energy projects?in India.

The $500 million in new loans will come on top of $75 million in financing that the Export-Import Bank has already provided this year for solar power projects in India.

?In fiscal year 2011 to date, the Bank has approved financing totaling approximately $75 million for four solar projects in India,? the bank said in a July 18 press release. ?The Bank also has about $500 million of India solar projects in the pipeline that will generate an estimated 315 MW of solar power.?

While in India last month, Export-Import Bank Chairman Fred Hochberg, an Obama appointee, announced two of the new solar projects the U.S.-government bank will be financing.

Idolizing Absolute Power: The Pro-Assassination Crowd

The Christian Science Monitor published a piece I wrote last month in opposition to allowing the U.S. government to kill Americans without a warrant, trial, or any judicial niceties. The article, ?Assassination Nation: Are There Any Limits on President Obama's License to Kill?,? spurred a torrent of feedback on Yahoo.com that vividly illustrates how some Americans now view absolute power.

Some folks believed that opposing ?extrajudicial killings? should be a capital offense. My article mentioned an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit pressuring the Obama administration ?to disclose the legal standard it uses to place U.S. citizens on government kill lists.? ?Will R.? was indignant: ?We need to send Bovard and the ACLU to Iran. You shoot traders and the ACLU are a bunch of traders.? (I?m not aware that the ACLU is engaged in either interstate or international commerce.) ?Jeff? took the high ground: "Hopefully there will soon be enough to add James Bovard to the [targeted killing] list." Another commenter ? self-labeled as ?Idiot Savant? ? saw a grand opportunity: "Now if we can only convince [Obama] to use this [assassination] authority on the media, who have done more harm than any single terror target could ever dream of...."

Many folks feared that any restrictions on U.S. government killing could be fatal. As ?Rogmac? groused: ?You guys who are against killing these guys are going to be the death of all of us.? Other commentators started from the self-evident truth that, as ?Bert? declared, ?In the best interest of the United Sates and it's citizen's, someone has to be the judge, jury and executioner.? This theory of government differs significantly from that proffered in the Federalist Papers. ?Rich? was sure everything had been done properly: ?The warrants have already been signed, the execution orders have all been approved now we just need to find them and eradicate them.? Having a president approve his own execution orders is more efficient than the procedures used by the U.S. government in earlier times. ?Coder Cable? joined the pro-power parade: ?In a time of war, the military (ie: President) is allowed to execute anyone for the crime of treason, assuming there is strong evidence to backup the claim.?

This was practically the only pro-assassination comment that referred to a standard of evidence. The question of whether government officials can be trusted to arbitrarily label Americans as enemies did not arise. Instead, most commentators favored ?faith-based killings,? blindly accepting the assertions of any political appointee as the ultimate evidence. ?Dark Ruby Moon? wrote: ?I won't loose a minutes sleep over these people being eliminated.... One of the reasons presidential elections are so important is we are picking someone who must make such difficult decisions and who is in the end accountable for those decisions.? Perhaps future presidential races will feature campaign promises such as ?Vote for Smith ? he won?t have you killed unless all his top advisers agree you deserve to die.?
